Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday!

On Thursday January 9th, the boys and girls had the opportunity to learn about STRUCTURES from "Scientists in the School."  The children were introduced to concepts such as SPAN, ENCLOSE and SUPPORT when discussing structures.  Thank you so much to our volunteers who helped run the hands-on centres and assisted children explore structures!

Here are snapshots of the learning taking place:

What does an egg do?  (Enclose)

What kind of material is it?

Using playmobile to find structures that span, support and enclose!

Investigating fasteners!

Buildings need a foundation!

Building a strong structure for the three pigs!

Adding pieces to the treehouse structure!

Describe the material...

A triangle is a rigid structure!

A square is a flexible structure!

Houses need to have a strut in order to make them rigid.

Discovering that working with nails and screws can be hard work!

Working with lock fasteners!

This is hard work!

We rely on so many materials everyday!

How should we build the base?

Fasteners!

Working Together to build!

I wonder if the wolf can blow this one down?

Cylinders are strong!
